Anyways, Shane requested that I doodle up Bea to go with the Tora I'd already doodled. Of course, he never specified which costume, and, well, I felt like indulging myself.
And taking a jab at the Superbuddies minis. Forgive the tangent, but I mean, seriously, Bea says that she's not actually naked in the pictures on her faux-pr0n site (Hunh. Firefox's spell check says faux isn't a word, but lets pr0n slide. I'm not sure what to feel about that.), but then she always ends up naked after she stops using her powers? She really wouldn't think to wear fire-resistant clothing when she's going somewhere where she knows she would be expected to use her powers at some point? Hell, if I were her, I'd be wearing fire-resistant clothes all the time. It only makes sense. That's a lot of what's wrong with the Superbuddies minis, really. They're only worth it for the jokes (on account of pretty much being nothing but jokes), most of which either fall apart when you bother to think about it at all (and I'm me, so I always think about it) or, honestly, really aren't all that funny to begin with. But, y'know, I really don't think I'd have half the problem with them if so many people would stop treating it like it's gospel or something. People, these minis are not the definitive characterization of the characters involved! Hell, half the time, it's not even good characterization of the characters involved. Don't get me started on Gladys. It won't be pretty.
But, ummm, right! Bea! In various costumes! although I know that I left at least one costume out. But I haven't really read anything with that costume in it, so eeeehhhhhh. (...Yes, this does mean that I haven't read the Death of Superman. Ssssshhhhhhh.)

You know, I'm not sure how I can reconcile my liking Nextwave (not as much as everybody else, to be sure, but I found it generally more pleasant than not) and not liking Superbuddies. I mean, Nextwave also takes established characters and makes them into jokes. And I'm sure most fans now would take that as the definitive portrayal of, say, Meltdown, which would bother me. Perhaps it's the fact that Nextwave is so clearly not trying to be anything but completely silly. (Although at least one character has shown up afterwards still in his Nextwave characterization, which bothers me.) Or that at least half the jokes are on new characters.
Oh, who am I kidding, it's all Stuart Immonen. I'll put up with anything for more Immonen.

And how can you have never read the Death of Superman! It has multiple Booster moments! I mean, come on!
Shobha- Easy peasy. Nextwave is a parody, as opposed to Superbuddies's string of jokes. A subtle, but very important distinction. And even that aside, they're pretty different brands of humor. Nextwave's humor is ridiculously over-the-top zaniness without a drop of serious in it. I mean, chicks in a blender, for example. Superbuddies, on the other hand, is, ehhhh, I don't necessarily want to say blander, but I dunno. It's a horse of a different color. I just can't entirely quantify it. And then they do things like the Orpheus Cliche, too, that keeps it from being pure humor.
It also helps that I have no prior experience whatsoever with the characters in Nextwave! :D But I am under the impression that the characters in Nextwave were, for, at least, for the most part, characters that hadn't been used in mainstream canon for years and years and years and years, right? So, it's more of a reinvention of them, right? Like, ummmm, shoot. I can't think of any examples.
Shane- I know, right? How could I possibly pass up on Booster getting his head slammed into a car door? ;D No, seriously, I know there are some Boosterly gems in there (I've seen some on the ever indispensable boosterrific.com), but I can't help but feel nothing but colossal apathy at reading a massive slugfest between Supes and Doomsday. Especially knowing that it was just a huge (and admittedly, extremely successful) publicity stunt. Superman died and then he came back. It's not something I find particularly interesting. If he died and kept fighting the good fight while basically a zombie, then that would be interesting. (Although I guess I shouldn't really reference that storyline in your presence. >.> Aheh.)
Psh. Ice is back. I've forgiven Mark Waid for that. And when you set that aside, I have a weird fondness for that storyline...perhaps because of my unusual obsession with all things leading up to Zero Hour.

It's really nice to see that someone shares my feelings about the Superbuddies stuff. I read the first Booster Gold series and JLI before getting them. So I knew Booster, loved him and liked the JLI humor. Superbuddies not so much. I didn't think it was that funny and thought that the Booster stuff was really out of character.
Hate the idea of Gladys so much (thank you Super Prime punch) and everyone was just being so cruel to him all through the series. It was the first/only time I returned something. It does confuse me though about how much is canon since DC is being vague about it. Like they never said if Bea and Booster actually went out. Of course no one ever mentions her and Guy either.

Erin- I know what you mean. I have gotten flak in the past for daring to do less than absolutely adore those minis. Nobody's asked me if I hate puppies and sunshine yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone did.
I loathe pretty much everything about Gladys, as an idea. It's just.... Nnnnnh. I'll make a post about it.
I believe the official word is something like "technically in canon, but with liberal time-punching." i.e. No Gladys. (DiDio said that the removal of Gladys was one of the best things Superboy-Prime's punching did, and it's one of the few things that I agree with the man most whole-heartedly on.)
I don't know about actually going out, but, I swear, if Booster and Bea haven't danced the horizontal mambo together at least once, I'll eat my hat. And none of my hats are particularly delicious-looking, either.
hotandcold: I've seen fans regard it as the bible of who these characters are and that sort of ticks me off. That's why a lot of people still say that Booster is a moron. I always wondered what Dan Jurgens thought of this. Because I know that he has said how he hated how Booster has been written as an idiot when he's not, though he never pointed fingers.
For the most part I'm a big canon person but I'm finding it hard to see where Superbuddies would fit in. I'm still learning about the DCU so maybe I'm wrong but a few things seemed to be conflicting with canon.
As for Bea I actually prefer if they didn't. One of the reasons is that I just don't want them to go past friends even briefly. The other is that I hate that most if not all of Boosters' relationships have only been hinted at and happened offscreen. I know Daniel/Rose is a given for BG to explore but I would like for him to get in a relationship.
It definitely ticks me off, especially when people do things like demand that Gladys be brought back. I'm going to start foaming at the mouth one of these days. Just you people wait.
Superbuddies does conflict with canon. A good deal. It was never supposed to be canonical, anyway. This is why I said "official word is" and not "logic would dictate" because logic has nothing to do with this, sadly. TPTB have declared it mostly canon, so I like pretending that only the parts I liked are canon. Which basically boils down to "Ralph and Sue are adorably married", "Mary is a dear, sweet thing", and "Booster is a native speaker of Esperanto".
I dunno, with their personalities and such, I don't think I'd believe that they've never, but, again, with their personalities and such, I don't think it would really add all that much baggage (if any?) to the relationship. So, really, I don't think it really matters if they did or didn't, because it doesn't really change anything, but I just can't imagine that they wouldn't.
It does totally suck that Booster never seems to get much in the way of an on-screen relationship. Sometimes I feel like I'm one of maybe 3 people in the world who remember that Booster dated Firehawk for a while. It would be very nice if Booster got a love interest at some point in the new series. I would personally love it if Dr. Tracy Simmons (the chick from Booster's JLU episode) made the jump from cartoon to comics, but I may very well be the only person in the world who holds that opinion.
Hotandcold: Oh yeah the demanding Gladys return (despite the fact that she's not considered canon anymore) really gets me. I saw a topic about it on comicbloc and whenever I see it I can't stop myself from groaning. She wasn't even a character, there is no plot there especially if you want to take Booster seriously, which I do.
I do remember after the "interview with Booster Gold" on Newarama someone asked Booster (cough*G.Johns*cough*) if he would have a threesome with Mary Marvel, Ice and Fire. He answered saying that he'd never get near Ice, he heard Mary was mean now and that he doesn't even want to discuss Fire, lol.
No, you're not alone with the Dr. Tracy thing, I've read fanfic. It's either her or Trixie that I'd like with him. I always got the feeling that he knew about Trixies' feelings but wasn't ready for a serious relationship yet in the old series.
Besides the Superbuddies stuff I hate the "Rip Hunter is a future Booster Gold" stuff, it would make no sense! They're different characters and should IMO stay that way.

Oh, man, the Rip Hunter = Booster Gold theories drive me insaaaaane. There's really absolutely no basis for it whatsoever, and it would totally ruin the both of them. Why would anyone want that?

I don't think I ever found a romantic Tracy/Booster fic, at least with that as the main plot. I have read one that she stood up for him, I think it was on fanfiction.net called the Greatest Story Finally Told. The only thing I can think of that was off was that I don't think Batman would act like he did in the first chapter.
I thought the same with Booster/Trixie, and that he felt that he could open up to her. He didn't want to lose a friend. Though I've seen the scans from Chase showing them being icy. I really wanted a story for that. YMMV?
I think time travel stuff is confusing enough for most readers without that. I really like Rip now and how he interacts with Booster. I'd like for him not to be related (we have two other family members and hopefully could get Shell back) but if he was I just hope it's not as his son or something. That would be weird for the whole mentor thing.
The icy thing in Chase mystifies me, really, considering that the last time they were shown on panel together, there was lip-lockage. Also, it looked like Dirk Davis was there and that definitely makes no sense.
